Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that it wasn't the ideal venue for her. Ford, instead of applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot on her third attempt, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time, she had already made her television debut in an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. In addition to her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001.
